Back to School Anxiety

Buckle up because this is going to be a pretty long post! Ever since I can remember I've always had back to school anxiety, and I don't mean regular jitters. I'm talking about feeling sick for a whole week before school starts. Which sounds a bit dramatic, but it's something I've been dealing with since kindergarten, you can ask my parents.

The symptoms are always the same for me, I barely get any sleep, I stop eating, and I have this constant nauseous feeling. It's been the same every year until about my second year of university. I think now it has mostly to do because of college/university schedules. Because they go by semesters instead of by years, so every time a semester rolled around I felt prepared because it's only been a few weeks since the last semester.

I've been in school for 5 years now, and I've only taken a break for the summer twice. But this year, it's completely different. I've been out of school for a whole year for personal reasons, which I really don't want to get into. So this semester is coming close and I'm getting back to school anxiety once again.

Thinking about my first day back has me both excited and very anxious. Feelings I always tend to get when school is rolling around once again. The closer I get to the first day, the less excited I am and the more anxious I get. This time though,  I've got the blog with Daphne, and it's been so much easier to talk about my anxiety and I've decided to write down some tips for myself and hope I can help anyone who also deals with back to school anxiety. Remember why you're attending school. This one is pretty hard, so you kind of have to sit down and think about it. I absolutely love to learn, and I absolutely love my major. I might not be involved when it comes to extracurricular activities but I really do love school. I also feel really lucky to go to school, and can't wait for my first day when I realize how lucky I am.

Get everything ready. Although my professors don't give out their syllabus until their first day of school (eye roll) I like to be as prepared as possible. I like to get my planner ready and look at the textbooks needed for my classes and try and read up on them a little. At least the first chapter before the first day of class. I even scramble around my house looking for typical school supplies, a pen, a notebook, and some highlighters.

You got this, you can handle it. This is something I find myself saying to myself, like a mantra. Because with anxiety I tend to worry about things I shouldn't I try to conquer one fear at a time to try and not get overwhelmed by everything. This semester I'm being full time and although it's a bit daunting, I got this and I can handle it.
