22 Things I'd Tell My Younger Self

I've recently turned 23 and the few days leading to my birthday I just kept thinking about how much I've changed in the past year alone, and then started thinking about how much I've grown as a person in general. I thought about maybe writing a post about some of the things I've learned in the past year, but this post kind of ended up being things I'd tell my younger self. Whether I'd tell myself a year ago, or five, I found them all very fitting. Happy birthday to all my fellow Libras. And thank you to anyone who has ever impacted my life in any way.

So without further ado, to my younger self:

1. Things aren't just black and white, people aren't just good or bad. Good people do bad things, bad people do good things.

2. Waking up early in the morning doesn't get any easier.

3. Mental illnesses don't have to completely take over your life, you won't be able to fully conquer it, but you'll know how to handle it.

4. Seeking help for mental illnesses doesn't make you weak, it actually makes you strong and more educated.

5. People won't understand certain aspects of your life, but don't get angry, inform them as best as you can. Getting angry or upset doesn't help the situation.

6. No matter how eloquently you write an email to a professor, there's a 90% chance that they'll write back to you as if they were texting a friend. Example - Okay, that's perfect. It's always frustrating when it happens, so don't spend an hour formatting an email to them.

7. Always figure out what is the worst that could happen in any situation and find a solution, so that when the worst comes you'll know what to do and won't feel in such a panic.

8. No one will understand your love for boybands, except the ones that love boybands. That's okay.

9. Feminism is much more than just women empowering women. Feminism ties in with racism and immigration. White feminism is not the same as Feminism. Keep informing yourself about the inequalities in the world.

10. Always stay educated. Keep learning! Just because you're not in school, does not mean that your learning has to stop.

11. Being stressed out doesn't help any problem or situation. Just breathe, everything will be okay.

12. Sunsets are always beautiful, no matter where you go.

13. Flying gets easier. Try and get the night flights to watch the stars at night and be amazed by just how small you actually are.

14. Sometimes the people you care about will hurt you the most, learn to forgive them.

15. Some people will find a way to wiggle into your life, and they'll be more family to you than your own family.

16. Don't stop journaling! Journal with everything you have, because when you look back at your entries you'll know when you were being sincere and when you weren't.

17. Music heals. Music uplifts. Keep making playlists and keep sharing your love for music.

18. Take care of yourself. Do the things you love and share your love of things.

19. Nothing is wrong with being passionate about something.

20. Trying new things is scary, but don't let it stop you. Especially trying new foods.

21. Not all friends are forever and that's okay. Don't blame everything on yourself. Some things end with time. Besides, who knows what the future holds.

22. Breathe. Everything is okay. Everything will be okay. Smile everyday and look for kindness everywhere. Celebrate kindness and remember to always be the best you could be.
